In May of 2005, the Governor of California and the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) established the Science-Mathematics Initiative (SMI), a program designed to significantly increase the number of UC graduates trained to be mathematics and science teachers. In response, UCLA, along with 8 other UC campuses, established a campus CalTeach Program. The UCLA program has created academic courses that include both seminars taught by innovative practicing teachers, and a weekly field experience in neighboring schools.
Many of the classes in CalTeach-Math are required for the Math Teaching Major, Minor and Joint Math Education Program, although you do not need to be part of these programs in order to enroll in these classes. We hope to see you in these classes!
These classes are designed for all Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) majors interested in teaching as a career. They give insight to and experience with the teaching profession.
