About Philip C. Curtis, Jr.

Professor Philip Curtis’ interests include functional analysis, especially commutative Banach algebras, and mathematics education. He authored two textbooks and thirty-four papers, including seminal papers on the continuity of homomorphisms of Banach algebras with Bill Bade. His service to the University includes Department Chair, Chair of the Faculty of the College of Letters & Science, and Chair of the UC Office of the President Board of Admissions. Prof. Curtis served as Chair of the UC/CSU Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP) from 1978-2003. He was instrumental in the development of the UCLA California Mathematics Project and played the key role in founding the Department’s Joint Mathematics Education Program, Mathematics Teacher in Residence Program, and MDTP site.
