We are thrilled to celebrate the success of our inaugural Applied Mathematics Teachers Circle @ UCLA. It was wonderful to see such an amazing turnout of educators and math enthusiasts.
Event Highlights
Through the generous support of the Nicholas Endowment, participants engaged with brand-new lessons in applied mathematics and pedagogy. Our elementary educators explored how scientists study asteroids through counting, measurement, and crater simulations, while high school participants learned how early astronomers used geometry and trigonometry to estimate the size, volume, and motion of celestial objects.
The day also featured an exclusive tour of the UCLA Meteorite Gallery, led by the incredible Valeria Jaramillo Hernandez. Her expertise brought a unique perspective to our mission of helping students use math to make sense of the world. From exploring how scientists study asteroids to reasoning with data, Valeria’s guidance provided a truly memorable experience. Her tour was an excellent way to help educators connect the math they were learning to real-world applications.
What’s Next?
A huge thank you to the Nicholas Endowment for making this event possible, and to everyone who joined us to explore mathematical thinking and pedagogy. Your energy and enthusiasm made our first AMTC a resounding success.
We look forward to our next AMTC and can’t wait to share more innovative lessons to bring math to life in the classroom.
