Abstract: Join our panel as we discuss the challenges and opportunities in conducting research on innovative programs in schools and math classrooms. In 2020 the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation launched the Algebra 1 Grand Challenge providing $1M pilot-study grants to 11
organizations to design and study solutions to make Algebra 1 more accessible, relevant,
and collaborative for students who are Black, Latino, English Learners, and/or experiencing
poverty. The American Institutes for Research partnered will all grantees to develop and
implement research projects aimed at understanding the impacts of these solutions with
teachers and students participating in these innovations. Three grantees from the Young
People’s Project, the UCLA Curtis Center, and Rhode Island Department of Education will
share their wisdom gained through enacting change management and studying their
solutions for improving student math outcomes.
